Sketches from Week 31 (Oct 7 - 13, 2013)

Flew to Florida this week to present my work and stories at the national American Bamboo Society conference in West Palm Beach. My parents live between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami so it was also a great opportunity to spend some time with them again. I really enjoyed the homemade bread my dad is so fond of baking :)

Haha…

I asked my mom about the old ski goggles sitting on the windowsill and she rolled her eyes and said “Ah! Tu padre… !” Apparently he uses these rose-tinted prescription goggles as sunglasses when the sun is too strong by the window… Except that during the 40 years he’s had them, a) his prescription has changed so he can’t really see straight with them and b) the bridge is broken and the goggles are held together only with medical tape. But he loves them and keeps using them, even put them on we were applying finish to one of my Yolanda chairs that they keep in their apartment. LOL, dad…

It was amazing to reconnect with Simon Velez, Marcelo Villegas, David Knight and others at the conference as well as meet so many other interesting people! We all enjoyed ourselves with the company and fabulous food. Shanti’s Bamboo Leaf tea is very tasty and good for you, too… she was serving up complementary cups of it between presentations. David’s company, Teragren, is the one that supplied me with the bamboo laminates I used to fabricate my Ukao furniture back in 2001 – 2004. He and his wife Ann have begun another bamboo initiative which we will all hear about soon enough :)

I also met Tara, a Reunion Island native and sculptor, who is working on a gorgeous large-scale bamboo mobile. Darrel DeBoer had his self-published books out for sale, “Bamboo Building Essentials” . A Korean delegation was there to promote the 2015 World Bamboo Congress to be held in Damyang, Korea… hopefully I can be out there for that!
