Sketches from Week 11 (May 20 - 26, 2013)

There's a comedic movie called "A Day Without a Mexican" which details the socio/economic impacts of a make-believe day in California without a single Mexican. I was reminded of this when I went a full week without bamboo! Instead, I finally responded to Ines' yearlong insistence that I come to Tulum, so I spent some time diving and adventuring with her and other friends, staying in a modest little room in a beautiful beachside place called Ahau Tulum.

Diving in the cenotes (from Mayan "dzonot" : fresh, or sacred well) was definitely the highlight of the week. With names like "the Pit", "Dreamgate" and "Dos Ojos", it was not hard to imagine how the Mayans believed that these gaping holes in the limestone were the gates to the underworld and treasured for their seemingly endless supply of fresh water. There are literally thousands of these pockmarking the peninsula and many of them are connected underground, creating a vast network for who-knows-how-many miles... Thanks to master diver Tommy from Easy Chango for delivering us safely into and out of the underworld!

Personally, I found the quality of light quite mesmerizing as we swam through stalactite and stalagmite-ridden passages... consider that a typical stalactite or stalagmite grows at the glacial rate of .13 millimeters per year and you know your looking at something OLD... very old.

Good times all around...

Josh, aka DJ Bushman (haha), entertained us with some music before a small beach party on the 25th...

JP seems to prefer doing his conference calling on Ines' canopy bed... does she even sleep?

Michael (Josh's brother) and Angie were a fun surprise... Angie did alot of eye rolling at all the Michael / Josh antics. Seems like they founded a business plan together over bottomless margaritas involving after-hours IMAX presentations...

Tara pretty much worked the whole time, unless she was diving deep into cenote music...

Me? I didn't miss bamboo too much. I just drew alot. Thanks Damiani, for finding my lost marker (and me) while I was innocently drawing your cabana....

And- I promise that THIS past week will arrive sooner -
